His Grace Worship Centre

Hampton Park, Melbourne

His Grace Worship Centre is a Christian church for a Samoan congregation in Hampton Park Victoria. The symbology of the Christian faith inspired the design narrative for this modern church on a vacant site. As the form unfolds the light from above reveals the inside. In the same way, the cross is also carved out of the wall, allowing the light to pass through it creating a moving shadow throughout the day. The solidity of the large, white-rendered walls and the proportions of the windows evoke a feeling of strength that is steadfast, grounded and permanent. Standing next to them creates an awareness of the human scale.

This project exemplifies community-driven design inspired by a vision. It united a community through their collective determination to create a place of worship as a legacy for future generations. The solidity of the structure represents the permanence of enduring faith. It stands as a symbol of unity, a place of worship, and a celebration of life through the enlightenment of their faith. Opened on Zoom during the pandemic, the building has become a place of Worship for the Samoan community.
