Brick House

Williamstown, Melbourne

Heritage-listed houses capture the stories of generations past and present. The renovation of this house was a profoundly personal journey for the client. The emotional connection to the existing house, her father’s legacy, preservation of its heritage, and the new addition that exudes a sense of permanence ensure that this dwelling's legacy as a home will endure for generations.

The existing house was renovated to include an ensuite, walk-in wardrobe, bathroom, and an additional north-facing open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area with access to a courtyard and the rear garden. The form of the new extension subtly contrasts the old house, while the courtyards create a visual connection to it.

The renovation of the weatherboard-clad Californian bungalow was a delicate play of preservation and innovation. The original exterior and interior fabric, each with its unique story, were meticulously maintained. The addition, constructed from bricks, introduced a new architectural element. The striking domed brick ceiling anchors the dwelling with a sense of permanence and is a unique feature of the house.
