Docklands Surf Park

Docklands, Melbourne

The Docklands Surf Park project explores activating the water to manipulate the existing image in a post-industrial setting to change the perception of the boundaries that limit a connection with the water. This proposal reimagined Melbourne's Docklands and received multiple design awards. Our ongoing research seeks to add new knowledge to the potential of urban waterways to be perceived as public spaces. Damian graduated with a PhD for his research in 2023.

The proposed Surf Park acknowledges that post-industrial urban waterways, which have been developed as mixed-use precincts, have failed to recognise the value of the waterbody as a public space. At its core is the desire to see the Docklands Precinct rejuvenated.  It’s crying out for more public space. There’s also a large body of water that separates the different arms of the Docklands, so we see this as an opportunity to help connect them. It’s an accessible place for pedestrians to walk. Creating a central park where Melbournians can access the water creates a sense of place.
